While much of this growth has been driven by large enterprises, AI has now become a strategic topic for businesses of every size.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"326\" data-end=\"989\">The gap between large companies and SMEs, however, remains significant. In 2025, <strong data-start=\"407\" data-end=\"443\">71% of large Italian enterprises<\/strong> had launched at least one AI project, compared to just <strong data-start=\"499\" data-end=\"542\">8% of small and medium-sized businesses<\/strong> (AI Observatory, Politecnico di Milano). The most concerning figure relates to preparedness: according to the <strong data-start=\"653\" data-end=\"705\">2025\u20132026 Digital Innovation in SMEs Observatory<\/strong> by the Politecnico di Milano, <strong data-start=\"736\" data-end=\"830\">76% of Italian SMEs have not invested and do not plan to invest in artificial intelligence<\/strong>, only <strong data-start=\"837\" data-end=\"892\">7% have implemented structured AI training programs<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"898\" data-end=\"988\">47% have not carried out any Research &amp; Development activities in the past three years<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"991\" data-end=\"1094\">So why is AI becoming such a prominent topic among SMEs as well? Because of three converging pressures.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Competitive pressure<\/strong><br \/>\nLarge enterprises are building a significant operational advantage. Companies that stand still are not losing ground tomorrow\u2014they are losing it today in terms of response times, operating costs, and service quality.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pressure on margins and productivity<\/strong><br \/>\nLabour costs, energy prices, and increasing operational complexity continue to erode margins. When applied effectively to repetitive tasks, AI can deliver measurable reductions in both time and errors.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Skills shortage<\/strong><br \/>\nFinding and retaining qualified talent is becoming increasingly difficult. Automating low-value activities allows key employees to focus on higher-impact work and strategic priorities.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span class=\"text-primary\">WHAT THIS MEANS FOR SMEs<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong>There is no need to replicate what large enterprises are doing. These are typically the areas where AI can deliver the greatest value.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Security, Compliance, and Risk Management<\/strong>. Data protection, access control, AI Act compliance, and oversight of AI-generated outputs are essential components of a responsible AI strategy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Skills, Ownership, and Change Management.<\/strong> Who owns each use case?
